This is the part of my 100 Short Stories in 2015 challenge.
When LW31, a domestic model robot, brought Mrs. Griffin’s dinner into her bedroom, it found her preparing to commit suicide.
I listened to this while on the go, which might have been a mistake as I found myself tearing up at the busstop. It is a slow build but a very satisfying story.
Summary: This is the story of an elderly woman trying to commit suicide as she believes she has nobody left who loves her. Her helper robot gets her to tell it about her life in a series of scenes. In between the flashback scenes she contemplate which method of suicide to use.
At first I thought the story was kind of boring and a bit ordinary, but as it build I found myself getting more and more invested in both the story and the characters. I wanted to know their story. The story was packed with emotion without it seeming manipulative. We gets her life story in drips and drops over the stories 20 pages. At the end I found myself standing at the bus stop waiting for a bus home with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. That is powerful storytelling!
